Barry Borgerson, Ph.D.:

Barry Borgerson is the founder and President of Complete Leadership, Inc. and the pioneer of Background Process transformations.

Barry's research on the mind and his practical application of Background Process transformations began over 20 years ago while he was an executive trying to overcome the inability of some people to execute at the desired level. It was during this time that he began to see how even the most successful professionals experience blockages to action and exhibit dysfunctional behavior. Barry had been dealing with these inabilities to follow clear directions by either overpowering them or having them overpower him. He also noticed the similarity between these behaviors and the inability to think outside of paradigms and to make cultural changes. It became clear to Barry that huge performance gains would be realized if he could find a methodology for systematically transforming these types of behaviors and thought constraints.

Throughout the years, Barry developed an explicit distinction between foreground and background mental processing. He performed an exhaustive investigation of the mechanisms and effects of mental activities that occur below our level of awareness and beyond our intentional control. He discovered that background processing is what controls leadership competencies, and therefore, transforming background processes is the key to achieving significant performance improvements.

Today Dr. Borgerson is the preeminent expert on Background Process transformation. His methodology for Background Process coaching is now considered by a rapidly growing number of executives, coaches, and psychological experts to be the new frontier in performance possibilities for executives.

Barry had extensive opportunities to perfect his transformation techniques throughout his accomplished executive career as well as in his coaching practice over the last 5 years.

The technical phase of his career was characterized by high achievement. It included inventing a computer (Sperry Univac 1100/60) that generated several billion dollars in revenue, receiving several patents, chairing two international conferences, publishing extensively (received "best paper" award from an international conference), being elected chairman of the US association of computer architects, and touring China for one month in 1978 as an invited member of a delegation of computer experts.

The technical-management phase of his career was characterized by increasing leadership responsibility. It included being in charge of all product and technology research for a major computer company (Sperry Univac), serving as an elected officer of a public company in charge of all technical and operations activities (Manufacturing Data Systems, Inc.), and leading the successful large-scale effort to develop high-speed imaging solutions to replace electromechanical check processing equipment (Unisys).

The general-management phase of Barry's career provided many leadership development opportunities for himself and those he led. It was characterized by successfully running Profit and Loss organizations. He was VP and GM of a business unit, Group VP and GM of a diversified, multinational business group (both at Unisys), and CEO of a smaller software and services company (Cimage Corp). He turned around a plant that was about to be closed, negotiated out of inherited, crippling contracts, changed a hostile union into a cooperative partner, and turned non-profitable businesses into profitability.

Barry Borgerson received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in computer science with a minor in the management of human resources. In addition to having served on business boards, Barry currently is chairman of the board of two non-profit organizations that provide, for underserved youth, after-school clubs, tutoring, and mentoring in computer technology, math, and science.
