Leadership Greatness
While Foreground Processes control mangement achievement, Background Processes control leadership greatness. It is Background Processes that manage most of the people side of doing business. That is the underlying reason leadership is distinguished from management. It is also why leadership characteristics have remained elusive and development techniques have not kept pace with the growing need to achieve peak performance. It also explains why so many people still wonder whether leaders can be effectively developed or if people must be born with leadership abilities. Background Processes are difficult to change without a targeted methodology for transformational coaching. Many executive careers have been stalled and sometimes ended over a Background Process they were unable to change.
The Center for Creative Leadership has published a study that identified the top derailers of Executive careers.** Four out of the top five derailers listed are controlled by Background Processes:
- Inability to develop or adapt (Background)
- Poor working relations (Background)
- Inability to build or lead a team (Background)
- Poor performance (Foreground/Background)
- Authoritarianism (Background)

The largest and most sustainable gains in performance that any leader of an organization can achieve are through transforming Background Process deficiencies into proficiencies.
If Background Processing is so important, why is it so neglected? The reason is because Background Processing hasnt been recognized or taught as a discipline. People literally dont know what they are looking for. What has been missing is a discipline for transforming Background Processes. Until now!
